IBP Calls for “Respect for Constitutional Institutions” Following Revocation of Sen. Trillanes’ Amnesty Grant
IBP – The Integrated Bar of the Philippines reacted to the revocation of Senator Antonio Trillanes IV’s amnesty grant.
President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, through the Proclamation 572, voided Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV‘s amnesty grant. The latter’s amnesty was granted by then-Pres. Benigno ‘Noynoy’ Aquino III in 2011.
Sen. Trillanes showed no fear over the revocation of his amnesty grant. According to him, no evidence can be found against him.
Pres. Rodrigo Duterte wanted to abide by the law. He wants no arrest for Sen. Trillanes without the warrant. That is what Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque stressed.
The revocation of the amnesty grant of Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV gathered different reactions from the people. One of those is the Integrated Bar of the Philippines or the IBP.
Based on a recent report on News5, the IBP is calling out for “sobriety and respect for constitutional institutions”. The organization of lawyers stressed in a statement that a person freed through the amnesty is facing the law as if he has not done any offense.
“[A]mnesty once granted cannot be simply dissolved by the invocation of the words “void ab initio” as though it were some magical incantation that can nullify vested rights,” the IBP said.
Based on the report, the IBP also reacted to the move to arrest Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV over cases that were already dismissed.
“The IBP views with deep concern the position being peddled to the public that records of the Executive Branch can be used to overturn final dismissals of criminal charges by our courts,” the organization stated.
Currently, Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV is staying under the custody of the Senate. With regards to the court-martial, the Armed Forces of the Philippines is awaiting the decision of the court.
