Miss Universe 2020: 18 Countries Back Out, Rabiya Mateo Reacts

These countries backed out in Miss Universe 2020 pageant. Will this give Rabiya Mateo a higher chance to win?

MISS UNVERSE 2020 – For the 69th Miss Universe amid the pandemic, 18 countries have backed out from joining the pageant.

The representative of the Philippines in the Miss Universe pageant this year is the Iloilo beauty Rabiya Mateo. For this year, as per the announcement of the Miss Universe Organization (MUO), the prestigious will be on May 16 in the coastal city of Hollywood in Florida while the next edition will on December 2021 where the winner for this year is going to enjoy the title for a maximum of 7 months only.

But for this year, 18 countries have backed out and among them is the Germany. Due to the pandemic, they were not able administer a national pageant which is why they did not send a candidate. Other countries who will be absent in this year’s pageant are Angola, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Georgia, Guam, Kenya, Lithuania, Mongolia, Namibia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Saint Lucia, Sierra Leone, Sweden, Tanzania, Turkey, and U.S. Virgin Islands. This is because of the implemented lockdowns and travel restrictions.

Meanwhile, countries like Argentina, Bulgaria, Dominican Republic, Mauritius, Panama, Portugal, South Korea, Ukraine, and Puerto Rico have appointed their respective candidates. They were not able to hold their national pageant because of the world’s health situation. Actually, 30 of the candidates in the pageant were appointed.

Aiming for the fifth Miss Universe crown for the country, Rabiya considers the backing out of some countries as her chance to land a spot in this year’s competition. If she wins, she will be joining the line of winners: Gloria Diaz, Margie Moran, Pia Wurtzbach, and Catriona Gray.
