ABS-CBN-Kris Aquino Ties: Why franchise not renewed in PNoy’s term?

Solon asked this regarding the ABS-CBN franchise issue

Congressman Mike Defensor asked ABS-CBN executives why they did pursue in renewing the franchise during the administration of former President Noynoy Aquino when Kris Aquino was still the media company’s talent.

Speculations have been circulating regarding this issue concerning the TV network and the previous administration. Based on an article, it was alleged that Kapamilya broadcast journalists Noli de Castro and Ted Failon were the reasons why the franchise was not renewed.

Allegedly, ex-President Aquino declined the franchise application of the TV giant because De Castro and Failon were attacking his cabinet members. It was also alleged that it might be the reason why Kris was no longer part of the Kapamilya network.

However, Kris clarified that it was her fault that she is no longer a Kapamilya because she refused to sign the two-year contract that was offered to her by her former home network.

In a previous report, Kris answered a question from a netizen who asked why the franchise was not renewed during her brother’s administration. The social media influencer said that she is not in the position to answer this kind of question.

During the recent House hearing on ABS-CBN franchise, Rep. Defensor also threw to the same question to network’s CEO and President Carlo Katigbak and Chairman Mark Lopez.

“Kris Aquino po, ‘di nyo kinausap na tumulong para i-renew ang inyong prangkisa?” he asked based on the report from the Kapamilya news site.

Katigbak and Lopez said that they haven’t talked to Kris Aquino regarding this matter. “We felt that we had time pa naman so we didn’t pursue it at that point when it was not moving anymore,” the latter said.

Furthermore, Katigbak said, “I don’t think there’s anything else I can add Mr. Chair except that we did file for the renewal of our franchise application with Congress and unfortunately for us, it was not acted on the 16th and 17th Congress.”
