Broadway superstar Lea Salonga shared this post as she was swearing ‘Pilipinas’ and this elicited speculations that it was about the case of Rappler CEO Maria Ressa.

Lea is one of the celebrities who is vocal about her views when it comes to social issues, whether in the Philippines or in other countries. She is considered one of the sources of pride in the country because of her achievement in the international theater and music industry.

She is indeed proud that she carries the name of the country every time she has performance abroad. However, in her recent Facebook post, she was swearing her nation. “Dear Pilipinas, p***** ina, ang hirap mong mahalin,” she wrote.

The singer-actress did not elaborate what she meant about this. However, in her reply to Constitutional Reforms advocate Orion Perez, Lea Salonga related her “problem”.

She said that she does not trust easily what she sees and reads even though the sources may have the people’s “unquestionable trust“. Lea also stressed that there is a “sense of fear that if anyone pisses off the wrong guy, one can get shot in broad daylight.”

In another reply, she said that criticizing the government does not mean it is an expression of hatred. “I would like to think that in a functioning democracy, this should never be anyone’s fear, that their criticism would land them in jail, or worse, a corpse lying on a curb,” the singer-actress added.

With this, based on the article from PEP, the question arises if Lea Salonga posted this to say her side regarding the case of Maria Ressa who was found guilty of cyber libel charges by the Manila Regional Trial Court on June 13.
