Is a magnitude 8 earthquake going to hit Mindanao?
EARTHQUAKE – There was this Facebook post circulating online that a magnitude 8 earthquake is going to hit Mindanao. How true is this?
“Mati, Davao, Tulunan, Sarangani, and Zamboanga fault lines can generate up to 8 magnitude earthquakes and thousands of aftershocks. Please be ready at all costs, it was been (sic) proven by Digos veteran seismologists.” This is what was stated in a post from Facebook page Ozamiz Spy about a magnitude 8 of earthquake which will next jolt Mindanao. Also, the post was attributed to the NDRRMC.
Fact Check: This is not true.
According to the NDRRMC website, the “impending M8.0 earthquake in Mindanao is a hoax and did not originate from the Council. Their operations center accordingly did not receive such advisory from the PHIVOLCS neither requested transmission of such message through TELCOs to their subscribers.
“The NDRRMC does not send messages of that sort. Currently, there is no technology that allows the prediction of earthquakes. Your NDRRMC will NEVER send baseless messages that will only spread fear among our people,” the NDRRMC also said.
Meanwhile, as per a record from PHIVOLCS, here’s the list of destructive quakes in the Philippines:
