VP Sara Duterte went to Mindanao to visit the quake victims.
On Wednesday, VP Sara Duterte visited the wake of the victims of the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that shook Southern Mindanao on June 8.
On Monday, June 8, a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Sarangani, leaving several deaths and buildings in ruin. Based on the reports, this natural disaster might have been caused by the three active subduction trenches surrounding Mindanao Island.
Office of Civil Defense (OCD) deputy administrator for administration Assistant Secretary Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV said there were deaths from Davao Region and Soccsksargen, which include 18 in Sarangani, 15 in South Cotabato, 11 in Davao Occidental, and one in Davao del Sur.
He added that some 630 were reported injured. However, as of now, these figures are still subject to validation and change.
On the other hand, based on the update from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), 33,596 families, or 149,372 individuals, from 184 barangays across the Zamboanga Peninsula, Davao Region, Soccsksargen, and BARMM have been affected by the earthquake.
The quake also damaged 2,994 houses, including 2,499 that were partially damaged and 495 that were totally destroyed in the Zamboanga Peninsula, Davao Region, and Soccsksargen.
To offer assistance and express solidarity with communities recovering from the disaster, Vice President Sara Duterte went to South Mindanao and visited the victims. During her visit, she emphasized the significance of earthquake preparedness and community readiness in minimizing the impact of future calamities.
She personally consoled the families of the victims and offered prayers to the deceased.
“Kanina pinaabot ko doon sa mga pamilya ng mga namatayan ang pakikiramay ko at ng buong opisina ng Office of the Vice President kasama na ang pakikiramay ng aming pamilya sa lahat ng mga kamag-anak ng namatay,” she said.
Duterte underscored the significance of emergency plans and disaster kits, as natural disasters strike unexpectedly.
