Health Department Advises Cyclists & Pedestrians to Take Precautionary Measures to Prevent Heatstroke This Dry Season

The Department of Health (DOH) advised the cyclists and pedestrians to watch out for heatstroke during this dry season.

DOH Director IV Dr. Beverly Ho advised the public to take precautionary measures during this summer season to protect themselves from heat exhaustion and heatstroke. She told the commuters to check the weather first.

Ho said that the people should always bring water and wear appropriate outfit before heading out to prevent heat exhaustion, which is usually characterized by rapid but weak heartbeat, muscle cramps, nausea, cold and clammy hands.

The DOH official advised the cyclists and pedestrians drink water regularly and rest under the shade when exposed under the extreme heat of the sun for a long period of time. They should also raise their legs to let the blood circulate well in the body when experiencing signs of heat exhaustion.

The symptoms of heatstroke are throbbing headache, very dry skin, vomiting, and unconsciousness, which cause further trouble and health problems in the future. Individuals should immediately go to a health facility after experiencing those symptoms.

“Kung alam natin na specifically sobrang init no’ng araw na ‘yun, we actually will advise that the cyclist or the pedestrian will have to stop from time to time, hindi ‘yung parang pipilitin nating matapos siya in a shorter period of time,” Ho said.
