Group of Workers Urges Employers to Take Action to Provide Relief to Employees

FEDERATION OF FREE WORKERS – A group of workers call on employers to take measures to ease the extreme heat at work.

The scorching hot weather that the country is currently experiencing has prompted a labor group to call on employers to take measures to ease the effect of extreme heat on their employees while at work.

On Saturday (May 13, 2023), the Federation of Free Workers has urged companies to prioritize the welfare of their workers by implementing policies that will help them cope with the sweltering temperatures.

According to Julius Cainglet, the Vice President for Research Advocacy and Partnership of the said organization, the heat index can still have an adverse effect on workers, even if their jobs do not involve prolonged exposure to extreme heat.

Cainglet emphasized the importance of open communication between workers and management to find ways to minimize the impact of the hot weather on their productivity and health.

“Napakahalaga po talaga na ang ating manggagawa ay makausap ang ating mga respective managements para pag-usapan kung papaano mas padadaliin at maiiwasan ang epekto ng init ng araw sa ating trabaho,” he said.

The group spokesperson has provided some suggestions for employers to mitigate the effects of heat in the workplace. One recommendation is to set up additional water stations to keep workers hydrated. Another suggestion is to schedule breaks during the hottest part of the day.

Additionally, employers are encouraged to review the advisory issued by the Department of Labor and Employment regarding appropriate work attire during extreme weather conditions.

As the country continues to experience high temperatures during the hot and dry season, the need to take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses has become more critical than ever. In fact, just recently, the heat index in Legazpi City, Albay reached a staggering 50 degrees Celsius.
