WHO declares COVID-19 global health emergency is now over.
COVID-19 – World Health Organization announces that the emergency phase of the pandemic COVID-19 is now over.
COVID pandemic killed at least 20 million and after many years, the emergency phase of this is finally over.
World Health Organization (WHO) International Health Regulations Emergency Committee had a discussion and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus accepted the advice of the committee for public health emergency of international concern to be lifted.
The emergency committee has advised him to declare an end and he accepted the advice.
As the end has been declared, a figure close to 20 million has been recorded as deaths. Despite the end of the healthy emergency phase, the virus is still a significant threat. And since the pandemic started, 765 million confirmed cases have been noted..
Tedros said, “The worst thing any country can do now is to use this news as a reason to let down its guard, to dismantle the systems it has built, or to send the message to its people that Covid-19 is nothing to worry about.”
To recall, it was in January 2020 that the WHO declared Covid-19 to be a PHEIC first.
Lockdowns were declared and for many months, most movements were restricted. Traveling from one destination to another, local or international, was prohibited. Going out was also limited and restricted so as to avoid the spread of the deadly virus.
Based on a report from CNN, Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO’s Covid-19 technical lead program on emerging disease reiterated that the virus is “here to stay”. She said, “While we’re not in the crisis mode, we can’t let our guard down.”
