Farmer Faces Estafa Charge and Jailed Over Unpaid GCash Loan

A 53-year-old farmer is now in jail after being arrested over an unpaid GCash loan that led to an estafa case.

The man, identified by police as alias Edmund, is a widower and a resident of Sitio Durog in Barangay Charity, Hamtic, Antique. He was arrested at around 9:06 a.m. on February 11, 2026, after authorities served a warrant issued by Branch 11 of the Regional Trial Court in Tuao, Cagayan.

According to the investigation, the case is linked to a loan worth around P16,000 that was obtained in 2024 through an online lending application. Police said the GCash account used to apply for the loan allegedly belonged to his daughter-in-law.

The loan was not paid, which prompted the lending company to file a complaint.

Authorities are also looking into the reported sale of a SIM card online for P600, which may have been used in connection with the transaction. Investigators are trying to determine how the account and SIM card were used and who had control over them at the time.

The charge filed against him falls under Article 315 of the Revised Penal Code, in relation to Section 6 of Republic Act 10175, also known as the Cybercrime Prevention Act. The court recommended a bail of P48,000 for his temporary release.

Police officials said they are continuing to examine the details of the case. There are also claims that the suspect is not familiar with using mobile phones and only uses GCash for basic sending and receiving of money, though this will still be subject to court proceedings.

As of this writing, the farmer remains detained at the Hamtic Municipal Police Station while waiting for the next steps in his case.
