ICC Set To Read Appeals Chamber’s Decision on Jurisdiction over Case of Former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte in Upcoming Hearing
RODRIGO DUTERTE – The Philippine President asked the International Criminal Court (ICC) to skip the April 22 hearing.
Former Pres. Duterte is detained under the custody of the ICC for more than one (1) year now. He is faced with three (3) counts of murder as alleged crimes against humanity filed by the prosecution team.

It was last March 11, 2025 when Duterte was arrested by the Philippine authorities upon his arrival from Hong Kong. After his arrest at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, the former President was brought to Villamor Air Base.
On the same day that he was arrested, former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte was flown out from the country en route for The Hague, Netherlands. His custody was immediately transferred to the ICC.

Former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte celebrated his 81st birthday last March and his family launched a website that is dedicated to his supporters. The Duterte family has always been vocal about their gratitude to their supporters who have stood with them.
Since his custody was transferred under the ICC, Duterte has not once attended the hearing of the foreign court in person. It was only during the very first session that he appeared remotely but, after it, he has skipped several proceedings of the ICC as he rejects the jurisdiction of the foreign court over him.

Based on News5, the International Criminal Court is set to have another hearing on April 22. The decision of the Appeals Chamber regarding the jurisdiction of the international tribunal is expected to be delivered at the said upcoming hearing. However, former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte wishes not to attend it.
Former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte asked the ICC Appeals Chamber to allow him to skip the April 22 hearing. Based on the post, the former Chief Executive wrote a waiver wherein he stated an order to his lawyers to represent him before the foreign court.

The Duterte siblings are taking turn in visiting former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte inside the ICC detention facility. Previously, several high-ranking officials during the Duterte administration went to The Hague.
According to former chief legal counsel Salvador Panelo, the Philippine government can allegedly take back the custody of Duterte immediately if it wants to.
