Jerome Francisco, a 28-year-old native of Murcia, meticulously crafts rattan baskets and sells them in various municipalities just to earn money and help his family. Hailing from Barangay Buenavista in Murcia, he faces the daily grind with admirable perseverance.
Sitting by the roadside in front of a fast-food restaurant, Jerome’s baskets catch the eyes of passersby. Each rattan basket boasts a unique design, crafted with care and originality.
The vendor’s talent for making these baskets was inherited from his father, who had relied on this trade for his livelihood. However, his father had to retire from basket making after 30 years due to old age.
Currently, Jerome carries forward the family’s age-old tradition. The rattan used to create these beautiful baskets is harvested from their own bamboo plantation. It requires skillful manipulation and hands sometimes bear the scars of working with tough bamboo.
