Police Arrests Jeepney Driver After Trying to Escape & Threatening Traffic Enforcer
A jeepney driver was apprehended and subsequently arrested for attempting to escape and allegedly threatening the life of a traffic enforcer in Manila.
The driver, identified as Mharwen Areglado, had only been operating as a jeepney driver in the city for two months when the incident occurred on Pedro Gil Street.
According to a report, CCTV footage captured the events as they unfolded. Areglado was caught by personnel from the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau after he dropped off passengers in an unauthorized location.
Instead of stopping and cooperating with the enforcers, Areglado slowly drove the jeepney forward, causing one of the enforcers to sit on the vehicle’s bumper in an attempt to prevent his escape.
Despite the enforcer’s presence, Areglado refused to comply and continued to drive the jeepney, making a turn onto a street in an attempt to flee. The enforcers gave chase, eventually catching up to Areglado and taking him into custody.
During the altercation, Areglado allegedly threatened the life of the enforcer who was on the bumper of his vehicle. The enforcer, identified as Melandro Alarcon, stated that Areglado even argued with him while he was issuing a ticket for the traffic violation.
“Kinabahan talaga ako, natakot talaga ako kasi nga hindi na biro ‘yung tulin niya,” Melandro said.
Areglado insisted that he did not commit any violation, but later expressed regret for his actions. Instead of simply paying a fine of P500 for disregarding a traffic sign violation, Areglado now faces the possibility of additional charges, including direct assault.
“Pasensya na po sa nangyari kung gano’n po. Wala naman po akong intensyon na saktan siya eh tsaka ‘yung pinaparatang nila sa akin na papatayin ko po siya, wala po akong ano sa isip ko. Natakot lang po kasi ako kaya ganoon po ‘yung nangyari,” Areglado said.
