VP Sara Duterte Wants Teachers Avoid Friending Their Students on Social Media

Vice President Sara Duterte ordered all teachers to avoid friending their students on social media platforms.

All employees of the Department of Education (DepEd) were instructed by the vice president and secretary of education to refrain from adding their students as friends on social media. This is in response to the DepEd receiving several allegations of alleged inappropriate behavior by some teachers toward their students who initiate online discussions.

Duterte forbade teachers from communicating with their students via social media, regardless of whether they are linked to them or not, based in the recently published DepEd Order No. 49. This also includes any online friendships between the teacher and the student on sites like Facebook.

“Avoid relationships, interaction, and communication, including following social media with learners outside the school setting, except if they are relatives,” said Duterte.

It is unclear if the restriction extends to the “group chats” that professors use to interact with their pupils outside of class, which are currently popular on social media. Based on the report, Duterte also issued a warning to DepEd staff members against utilizing their personal social media accounts.

Teachers are advised to use caution while sharing material on social media. Additionally, Duterte outlawed online brawls amongst DepEd personnel.

Duterte contends that employees of the DepEd should file formal grievances rather than vent their resentment on social media. The directive provides that failure to perform the aforementioned activities shall result in the outright refusal of any request or appeal for consideration in the Office of the Secretary.
