Grade 11 Student Sells Turon During Class & Helps Dad at Construction to Help Family
A grade 11 student is working in construction and sells turon in school for extra income to help his family.
A 16-year-old boy from Victoria, Laguna named Nico Vergara earned praises from the online community for selling turon in his neighborhood and even brings it to school to earn some extra income.
Vergara gets turon from his ‘godmother’ and sells it to teachers and fellow students at school. At first, he felt embarrassed because he didn’t know the teachers and students.
Sometimes, the young man earns P160 and gives it to his ‘ninang’ who will give him a certain amount as payment for his hard work. Aside from selling turon, he also helps his father at a construction site during vacation.
Sinusubukan kong tumulong,” Nico said.
Although Nico attends a private school, his instructor claims that many of the students there do not come from wealthy households and are dependent on the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps).
For the past six years, Nico’s mother Arlaine has supported him and his siblings by working as a domestic worker in Saudi Arabia.
The provincial government of Laguna also gave him a scholarship and a private organization gave him some cash assistance and groceries. His father Nestro was also given a regular job.
