Phivolcs Lowers Taal Volcano Status to Alert Level 2 on Saturday (April 9)

Phivolcs Releases Latest Update on Taal Volcano

The state volcanology agency Phivolcs has lowered the status of Taal Volcano to Alert Level 2 due to decreasing level of activity.

On Saturday (April 9, 2022), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has released the latest update regarding Taal Volcano. The alert status of Taal has been lowered to level 2.

Phivolcs explained that the announcement has been made due to the overall decreasing trend in the level of monitoring parameters. The phreatomagmatic eruptions since March 26 have already declined over the past few weeks.

The agency noticed a significant drop in phreatomagmatic bursts and volcanic activity over the past two weeks. Lesser volcanic earthquakes and volcanic degassing from the main crater pushed the agency to lower the volcano’s alert status.

However, the seismology bureau explained that they might raise the alert status to level 3 if there will be a remarkable increase of volcanic unrest.

“Alert Level 2 means that there is decreased unrest but should not be interpreted that unrest has ceased or that the threat of an eruption has disappeared. Should an uptrend or pronounced change in monitored parameters occur, the alert level may be raised back to Alert Level 3,” Phivolcs said.

The volcanology agency also reminded the residents living near the volcano to take precautionary measures for sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes, ash fall and volcanic bursts.

Phivolcs also advised the pilots to avoid flying near the main crater due to such activities.
