VOLCANO ALERT – The state volcanology agency Phivolcs reported that 13 volcanic quakes have been recorded at Taal Volcano.

On Monday (January 31, 2022), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that thirteen volcanic earthquakes were recorded in Taal Volcano in Batangas over the past 24 hours.

Taal’s upwelling hot volcanic fluids is the dominating activity at the main crater. The volcano reportedly emits 4,829 tonnes of sulfur dioxide and plume reaching up to 1,000 meters tall have been observed. The plume drifts northeast and southwest.

The agency said that Taal will remain under Alert Level 2 despite the irregularities. Alert Level 2 indicates an increased level of unrest. Taal Volcano Island and the Taal region started deflating in October 2021.

The public is strictly prohibited to enter Taal Volcano Island, which is considered as the Permanent Danger Zone especially the Main Crater and Daang Kastila fissures. Entry or boating on Taal Lake remains prohibited.
