20 Service Firearms were Recovered from AWOL, Dismissed Policemen of MPD

The Manila Police District (MPD) has recovered twenty (20) service firearms from Absent Without Official Leave (AWOL) and dismissed policemen.

According to the MPD report, they have recovered around 20 service guns from their staff who were discharged for a variety of reasons. PMaj Philipp Ines, the chief of the MPD’s Public Information Office, stated at a press conference that PMAJ Fernando Reyes’ personnel conducted the Oplan Bawi or guns recovery operation from March 4 to 6, 2022 throughout the city of Manila.

According to Ines, police personnel recovered roughly 20 service weapons of various brands. It was caught from those who were ill, resigned, were suspended, went AWOL or absent without leave, and failed to return the service guns supplied to them by the PNP were removed from service.

It has been learned that the purpose of recovering such firearms from such police officers is to guarantee that they cannot be used in the commission of crime or other criminal conduct. Oplan Bawi is also part of the Philippine National Police’s (PNP) strategy to guarantee safe and peaceful elections on May 9, according to MPD Director PBGen Leo Francisco.
