Cebu Mayor Edgardo Labella Dies at 70
CEBU MAYOR EDGARDO LABELLA – Michael Rama, the acting mayor of Cebu City, confirmed that Mayor Labella died early today, November 19, 2021.
The people of Cebu City are currently mourning the death of Cebu Mayor Edgardo Labella. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, acting Mayor Michael Rama confirmed the sad news.
According to Mayor Rama, Mayor Labella died between 3:20 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. today. The acting Mayor will be taking over the post of the late mayor. As of this writing, there are no further details released yet as to the death of Cebu Mayor Edgardo Labella.

Earlier, the Labella family said that the Mayor was hospitalized because of pneumonia. They confirmed that the Mayor was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) briefly but he was already moved back to a private room.
According to the report, in 2009, Mayor Labella was diagnosed with cancer but was cleared following surgery. In January this year, he had an ear infection that led to sepsis. His son Eugene said that his father almost died during that time.
In June, Cebu Mayor Edgardo Labella took a three-week leave amid the ongoing vaccination program against COVID-19 in the city. He confirmed that he almost died when he had sepsis and he was advised by the doctors to rest but he did not heed the call as it was amid the 2nd surge of the COVID-19 cases in the city.
Citing that the cases of COVID-19 in Cebu then were already manageable, the Mayor asked to take a leave to meet the call of his doctors.
Labella served as mayor of Cebu from 2019 until his death. Prior to it, he served as the city’s vice mayor from 2013 to 2019. More updates may be posted soon.
