Sen. Kiko Pangilinan Files Candidacy for Vice President
KIKO PANGILINAN – Senator Kiko Pangilinan has declared he will run for vice president in May 2022 polls. He will be the running mate of Vice President Leni Robredo.
Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan is the husband of Megastar Sharon Cuneta. He is the current party president of the Liberal Party. He also led the campaign bid of Otso Diretso in the 2019 midterm elections.
The 58-year-old politician is now serving his 3rd term in the Senate. In the latest Pulse Asia survey, for most preferred senatorial candidates, he was among who had a good chance of winning in next year’s election. He garnered a total of 26.8%.
After the news broke out that he’s going to be the running mate of Vice President Leni Robredo, Sen. Kiko Pangilinan lodged his COC at the Harbor Garden Tent in Pasay City on Friday, Oct. 8. The COMELEC had to set up a tent for the filing due to the threat of coronavirus (COVID-19).
Based on a report from Rappler, the politician’s vice-presidential bid was a last-minute decision. He has been chosen by various groups supporting the presidential bid of Robredo to be her running mate in the 2022 elections.
VP Leni Robredo accompanied Kiko Pangilinan during the filing. Both of them have opposed several key policies of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s administration including “drug war,” “death penalty,” pro-China policies, and stance on the West Philippine Sea.
Kiko will contend with Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, Dr. Willie Ong, Senate President Tito Sotto III, and former Manila Mayor Lito Atienza for the 2nd highest elected post in the country. Sotto is an in-law of Kiko’s wife.
In a previous article, the veteran actress was asked if she will join her husband in the world of politics. She said she has no plan of running for any government position despite the fact that politics is in her blood.
