Phivolcs Records 55 Volcanic Quakes & Short Phreatomagmatic Eruption at Taal Volcano

Phivolcs Releases Latest Update on Taal Volcano (July 7)

The state volcanology bureau Phivolcs recorded 55 volcanic earthquakes and a “short-lived” phreatomagmatic eruption at Taal Volcano.

On Wednesday (July 7, 2021), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) released the latest updates about Taal Volcano. The agency recorded a “short-lived” phreatomagmatic eruption at Taal’s main crater.

The seismology bureau recorded 55 volcanic earthquakes during the past 24-hour period. It includes 44 low frequency volcanic earthquakes, five volcanic tremor events, which lasted from two to five minutes and five hybrid earthquakes.

The volcano also generates low-level background tremors since April.  Taal continue to emit dark phreatomagmatic plume as it remains under Alert Level 3, which indicates magma extruding from its main crater.

Phivolcs also reported that the volcano emits at least 7,560 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas last Tuesday (July 6). The plumes reached up to 2,500 meters and drifted southwest due to the upwelling volcanic gas.

Taal is also expected to generate a phreatomagmatic eruption.

“At 5:18 AM today, a short-lived phreatomagmatic eruption occurred at Main Crater and generated a grayish plume that rose 300 meters before drifting southeast,” Phivolcs said.
