Phivolcs Releases Latest Update at Taal Volcano

The state volcanology agency Phivolcs recorded a total of 17 volcanic earthquakes at Taal Volcano in the past 24 hours.

On Monday (July 5, 2021), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology released the latest updates about Taal Volcano. The volcano reportedly generates 17 volcanic earthquakes during a 24-hour period.

Phivolcs announced on their 8 am bulletin that Taal generates 16 low frequency volcanic earthquakes and emits 2,500 –meter high steam-driven plumes. Last Sunday (July 4, 2021), the volcano reportedly emits 22, 628 tons of sulfur dioxide.

The Taal Volcano Observatory said that the voclano’s activity is still a part of the degassing or gas upwelling as it remains under Alert Level 3. Taal’s island surface continues to deflate, according to the seismology agency.

PHIVOLCS Director and Science Undersecretary Renato Solidum Jr. said that Taal is expected to generate drive explosive eruption due to the magma extruding from its main crater as it remains under Alert Level 3.

Solidum also suggests the evacuation of Agoncillo and Laurel residents in Batangas for possible phreatomagmatic eruption.

“Kahit hindi kasing lakas ng scale ng January 2020, ito ay sa unang aktibidad, first phase of kasalukuyang activity. Pero ‘yung pagsabog niya na phreatomagmatic, puwedeng magdulot ng pyroclastic density current. At dahil maikli lang ang tatawirin between the southwest side ng island at ilang barangay ng Agoncillo at Laurel ay puwedeng umabot kung sakali ang pyroclastic density current diyan sa kanilang lugar,” Solidum said.
