Free Beep Cards For Commuters – Service Provider Commits 125k Cards

AFPI To Give Away 125K Free Beep Cards For Commuters In EDSA Busway

FREE BEEP CARDS – Commuters of the EDSA Busway are to be given free Beep Cards says AF Payments, Inc., the service provider for the contactless payment system.

Recently, the government suspended the mandatory use of Beep Cards in the busways and allowed the use of cash. This was due to AFPI and the government not arriving at an agreement to waive the price of the cards for commuters.

However, the AFPI explained that they don’t get profit from the P80 price of the card. Instead, they said that the money goes straight to the manufacturer and that if the payment was waived, they would incur severe losses.

Luckily, according to an article from PNA, the AFPI committed to giving away 125k free beep cards. As such, the Department of Transportation thanked the service provider in a statement.

We thank AFPI for seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, and for considering the plight of our commuters who have just started to rebuild back their lives after a series of strict quarantine measures that put pressure both on their social lives and livelihoods. For them, every centavo counts

Meanwhile, the DOTr said that they have planned to use a contactless payment system long before the pandemic began. Along with this, they plan to utilize smartphones so that commuters may buy virtual tickets through contactless technology.

Furthermore, they said that this would be easier to implement as the facilities and technology to do so has become readily available. “Let us first focus on our goal to make the commuting experience of passengers on the Edsa Busway convenient and affordable“, said the DOTr.
