Sarangani, Davao Occidental Jolted by Magnitude 7.0 Earthquake
EARTHQUAKE ALERT – A powerful magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the waters off Sarangani, Davao Occidental on Wednesday (August 5, 2026).
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the earthquake occurred at around 12:13 p.m. The quake was tectonic in origin, and its epicenter was located approximately 258 kilometers southeast of Sarangani, Davao Occidental, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The powerful tremor was felt in several areas, prompting many people to leave buildings and move to open spaces for safety. In Barangay Mabila, Sarangani, residents quickly exited the barangay hall after feeling the ground shake.

A medical mission organized by a local group was being conducted in the area. Despite the sudden tremor, residents and participants remained alert and followed safety precautions.
The quake was also felt in General Santos City, South Cotabato, and nearby provinces. Many residents reported experiencing the tremor while at home, in offices, shopping centers, and other establishments. No immediate reports of major damage or injuries.
PHIVOLCS recorded Instrumental Intensity V in Sarangani, Davao Occidental, indicating strong shaking that could be felt by many people indoors and outdoors.
A separate magnitude 4.0 earthquake was later recorded south-southeast of Balut Island in the Municipality of Sarangani. The tremor occurred at a depth of 15 kilometers and was considered part of the region’s ongoing seismic activity.
Authorities reminded residents to remain vigilant and follow earthquake safety guidelines, especially in areas where strong shaking was experienced.

Despite the powerful tremor, PHIVOLCS said no tsunami threat was generated by the earthquake. The agency also noted that no serious damage or destructive aftershocks were expected based on its initial assessment.
