DepEd Firmly Rejects Students’ Call For #AcademicFreeze

DepEd FIRMLY REJECTS #AcademicFreeze – The Department of Education rejected thousands of students’ proposals for an academic freeze.

According to the education department, the proposal doesn’t consider the long term effects of interrupting the learning process of children. However, those who support the freeze claimed that no learning is happening amid the shift to an online platform. Instead, many claim they are merely passing requirements rather than learning.

Based on an article from ABS-CBN, Education Undersecretary Nepomuceno Malaluan said:

We believe that this call for academic freeze is a populist position that is not popular, because we already have the support of as many as 24 million learners and their parents who have enrolled and are ready to participate in distance learning

Furthermore, Malaluan said that the proposal was “ill-informed”. He stressed that online classes won’t be the sole distance learning system modality to be practiced in the country.

Under DepEd’s new system, among its platforms to provide education to students would be printed and digital modules, online classes, television, and radio. Meanwhile, Education Sec.  Leonor Briones stated: “It’s not as if biglaan na lang tayo magbukas ng ating mga eskuwelahan by October 5, dahil, more or less, alam na natin kung ano ang mga challenges at atin na itong tinugunan”.

As per the article, a petition calling for the suspension of classes with #academicfreeze has reached 233,000 signatories out of 300,000. Still, it seemed like DepEd has made up their minds regarding the issue.
