PHILHEALTH CHIEF – Former NBI Director Dante Gierran is the new PhilHealth chief and senators have these statements about this.

Dante Gierran is a former director of National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) who’s just recently appointed by President Rodrigo Duterte as the new chief of Philippine Health Insurance Corporation. This is after PhilHealth President and CEO Ricardo Morales resigned as advised by the president due to his medical condition.

To be appointed at such position, Section 14 of Republic Act 11223 or Universal Health Care indicated that the person must be a Filipino citizen and must have at 7 years of experience being in the field of public health, management, finance, and health economics or a combination of any of the stated expertise.

The senate president, Tito Sotto, says Gierran is a “good choice” as the new health department’s chief. Meanwhile, Senator Sonny Angara says, “He must shepherd PhilHealth into the 21st century using tools like information technology, blockchain, etc. He must also update the system of case rates which has given rise to systemic corruption.”

Senator Bato Dela Rosa, an ex-NBI Director, also expressed his happiness with the appointment as his “investigative expertise in decapitating the criminal syndicate” will be in use considering the alleged corruption

Senator Migz Zubiri, meanwhile, believed that he will be able to use his experience as former NBI head to “untangle the mafia web inside PhilHealth”.

And Senator Kiko Pangilinan expressed there’s a question with his qualifications as his lack of experience was ignored by the Malacanang upon appointing him. He added, “His predecessor too had no public health experience and that ended terribly for PhilHealth. For the sake of PhilHealth, I hope he succeeds where others have failed.”
