Archdiocese of Manila Suspends Public Religious Activities from August 3 to 14

ARCHDIOCESE OF MANILA – The Archdiocese of Manila will suspend masses from August 3 to 14 in response to the call of COVID-19 frontliners to place Manila under ‘enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).

On Saturday, August 1, members of various medical groups appealed to President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and the Department of Health Secretary Francisco Duque III to place Mega Manila under ECQ status due to the recent swell of COVID-19 cases in the National Capital Region (NCR). They told the government that the country’s healthcare system is already at its maximum capacity.

In a previous article, Senator Cynthia Villar said Manila could not be placed back to ECQ because it will shut down the economy and people will end up dying. Celebrities and netizens were hurt by her recent statement.

On Saturday, August 1, the Archdiocese of Manila released a Pastoral Instruction in response to the call of healthcare workers. The announcement was made by Bishop Broderic Pabillo.

He said there will be no religious activities in the churches and shrines in the archdiocese starting August 3 until August 14. However, he said the online masses will continue.

“As a response to the call of our medical people, all the churches and shrines in the Archdiocese of Manila will revert to the period of the ECQ protocols. We will not hold public religious activities from August 3 to August 14 but we continue our online religious activities. We will also use this time to evaluate our church response to the pandemic and see how we can improve them.”

Bishop Broderic Pabillo appealed to the devotees to help those who are severely affected by the pandemic. He also asked them to intensify their prayers for the COVID-19 frontliners.
