Supreme Court Junks SolGen Calida’s Quo Warranto Charge vs ABS-CBN Corp

Solicitor General Jose Calida’s Quo Warranto Petition Against ABS-CBN Junked by the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court junked Solicitor General Jose Calida’s quo warranto charge against the ABS-CBN Corporation.

In February 2020, SolGen Calida filed a quo warranto petition against ABS-CBN because of its alleged violations. The Kapamilya network repeatedly denied the accusations of the Solicitor General.

Calida is accusing the giant media company of allowing foreigners to take part in the ownership of the network, which is prohibited by the Philippine Constitution. He is also claiming that the network launches illegal pay-per-view platforms such as TV Plus subscription service and the KBO Channel.

On Tuesday (June 23, 2020), the Supreme Court dismissed the quo warranto plea of Jose Calida against the Kapamilya network since the company’s franchise has already expired. However, Calida’s petition remains pending.

According to some sources, the magistrates still believe that the giant network’s franchise still exists after it expired last May 4, 2020.

Currently, the ABS-CBN network remains off air in compliance with the cease and desist order from the National Telecommunications Commission. However, viewers can still watch their favorite show on Kapamilya Channel, which is available on SkyCable, Cable Link, iWant, GSAT, and other local cable firms.
