Award-Winning Actor Sam Neill Dies at 78
SAM NEILL – The award-winning actor best known for playing Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park films, has died at the age of 78.
He passed away on Monday, July 13, 2026, in Sydney, Australia. His family confirmed the news in a statement on Instagram, saying he died peacefully while surrounded by his loved ones. They described his passing as sudden and unexpected and thanked the medical staff at St. Vincent’s Private Hospital for their care. The family also asked for privacy during this difficult time. His cause of death has not been disclosed.
Neill had been diagnosed with stage three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare type of blood cancer, in 2022. However, he had recently shared that he was cancer-free after undergoing treatment.
Born Nigel John Dermot Neill in Omagh, Northern Ireland, in 1947, he began his acting career in 1975. His breakthrough came in 1977 with Sleeping Dogs, the first New Zealand film released in U.S. theaters. He later starred in several well-known films, including My Brilliant Career, Omen III: The Final Conflict, A Cry in the Dark, Dead Calm, The Hunt for Red October, Memoirs of an Invisible Man, and The Piano.
Neill gained international fame in 1993 when he portrayed paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park. He returned to the role in Jurassic Park III (2001) and Jurassic World Dominion (2022), making him one of the franchise’s most recognizable stars.
Over a career spanning more than 50 years, Sam Neill appeared in over 150 films and television projects. He earned a reputation as one of New Zealand’s most respected actors and left a lasting impact on the film industry. His performances, especially in the Jurassic Park series, will continue to be remembered by audiences around the world.
