Magnitude 7.1 Earthquake Hits Indonesia Coast

EARTHQUAKE ALERT – USGS reported that a magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit off the Indonesian coast in the Molucca Sea.

On early Friday morning (November 15, 2019), the U.S. Geological Survey recorded a magnitude 7.1 quake about 140 kilometers (86 miles) northwest of Ternate in North Maluku province, Indonesia.

A tsunami warning has been also raised for nearby areas such as North Maluku and North Sulawesi but eventually canceled by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climate and Geophysics Agency.

North Maluku’s Ternate city allegedly experience up to 6 centimeters while North Sulawesi’s Bitung town had a small tsunami of 10 centimeters a few minutes after the quake. The residents of North Maluku and North Sulawesi were also instructed by the authorities to return to their respective houses.

The national disaster agency is still collecting details and information regarding the possible effects that may have been caused by the powerful tremor.

Previously, the Cotabato and several parts of Mindanao have been struck by a series of powerful temblors that displaced thousands of residents and causes damage to numerous houses and establishments.
