Taal Volcano Status Downgraded by Phivolcs From Alert Level 3 to Alert Level 2
The state seismology agency Phivolcs has lowered the alert level status of Taal Volcano to Alert Level 2 due to decreased unrest.
On Friday (February 14, 2020), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has downgraded Taal Volcano from Alert Level 3 to Alert Level 2. However, residents must not interpret that unrest has ceased.
Taal is showing less volcanic earthquake activities and emitting weaker steam-laden plumes over the past few weeks. Phivolcs still prohibits the residents to enter the permanent danger zone.
“DOST-PHIVOLCS is lowering the alert status of Taal Volcano from Alert Level 3 to Alert Level 2 to reflect the overall decreasing trend in the level of monitoring parameters,” Phivolcs said in an advisory.
Alert Level 2 is the second-lowest in a 5-step warning system. The volcanology agency warned the public that the volcano could still generate sudden steam-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, and ashfall.
Phivolcs also said that Taal Volcano could be downgraded to Alert Level 1 if it continues to show decreased signs of unrest and persistent downtrend in parameters.
