Circulating on social media was a tarpaulin of Malabon Mayor Jeanie Sandoval dressed as the Virgin Mary, which drew mixed reactions and criticism from netizens. The image that widely spread online came along with a message related to the observance of Holy Week.

After the buzz it created, Malabon City issued a statement to clarify that the circulating narrative is false. The local government emphasized that the tarpaulin is a form of misinformation and urged the public to be more cautious in sharing unverified content online.
They warned the public that such false narratives can mislead the people and eventually damage the involved individuals unfairly. The material quickly gained traction online because of its sensitive religious theme.
“Ang kumakalat na pahayag ng umano’y paghingi ng paumanhin ay peke at hindi rin nagmula sa Mayor o sa alinmang opisyal na channel. inihikayat namin ang publiko na maging mapanuri at huwag basta magbahagi ng hindi beripikadong impormasyon. Sumunod lamang sa mga opisyal at mapagkakatiwalaang pahayag. Maraming salamat po,” the statement read.
The Malabon City government reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the integrity of its officials and ensuring transparent and accurate communication with the public.
This fake news is a reminder of how quickly false information can spread online. Moreover, it highlights the value of verifying information before drawing conclusions or sharing viral posts, as this is not the first time misinformation has targeted public officials.
