Taxi Driver Suffers Injuries After Being Slashed by Passenger

A taxi driver in Ermita, Manila was injured after one of his passengers suddenly slashed him in the neck, after complaining about the high fare.

According to the police, three passengers boarded the taxi in Pasay City and asked to be taken to Santa Mesa. While on the road, the group began arguing among themselves. They later asked the driver to stop along Ayala Boulevard, saying one of them needed to use the restroom.

The driver was shocked when one of the passengers suddenly told another to attack him. Before he knew it, one of them had already slashed his neck. A struggle followed, forcing the taxi to stop. Two suspects ran away, while one remained inside the vehicle.

The wounded driver was able to call for help from traffic officers nearby, leading to the arrest of the first suspect, known only as Simplicio. He said they were tired and hungry after applying for construction jobs earlier that day and claimed their bodies acted out of impulse.

The second suspect, known as De Guzman, was later found in Mandaluyong City. He then pointed police to the third suspect, called Jerusalem, who was tracked down in Quezon City. Jerusalem admitted he was the one who slashed the driver, saying he was overwhelmed by exhaustion and hunger.

“After po nu’ng sabi nga, iihi nga po ako. Tapos ‘yun, bigla na po gumalaw po ‘yung katawan ko po, ‘yung kamay ko po. Na-slash ko na lang po. Napagtanto ko po na bakit ako may hawak na kutsilyo. Na-over fatigue siguro po tapos gutom po,” alias Jerusalem said.

Police believe the motive was related to the fare, which reached around ₱280 by the time they reached Ayala Boulevard. The passengers also admitted they only had ₱250 with them.

The slashed driver was brought to the hospital and was discharged after two days of treatment. Meanwhile, the three suspects remain under the custody of the Ermita Police Station and are facing charges of frustrated murder.
