In a post, Karen Davila slams corruption anew.
ABS-CBN broadcaster Karen Davila laments about the rising deaths due to Typhoon Tino as one of the effects of massive corruption in the flood control projects.
Among the hardest-hit provinces in the Philippines by Typhoon Tino is Cebu. Wiped out houses, swelling of rivers, flash floods, landslides, and several areas were submerged in deep waters are some of the effects of the strong typhoon. Apart from this, victims are also suffering from enduring shortages, widespread blackouts, and communication disconnections.

But one can’t help but ask: could these tragedies have been mitigated—if only officials and government agencies had used the funds intended for flood control projects properly?
As much as we all know, several politicians and government officials are tagged in the massive anomalies in the flood control projects in the Philippines, amounting to billions of pesos. These funds were meant to improve the lives of Filipinos, provide protection, and prevent the devastating aftermaths that disasters like this bring.
The funds may not stop the strong typhoons and other calamities from happening, but they can significantly improve and complete the infrastructure needed to reduce their impact to save lives and homes. More importantly, for breaking the cycle.
As of this writing, Typhoon Tino’s death toll is now at 188 and still rising. In a social media post, broadcaster Karen Davila spoke anew of the corruption and how it affects the people.
In her post, Davila noted that from 2022 to 2025, Cebu has 414 flood control projects worth PHP 26.7 billion. This is just in Cebu alone to “protect our people, homes and livestock,” however, with the recent events, these flood control projects failed to do the reason why they were funded. Perhaps the funds were there, but the projects weren’t?
“At hindi lang ito sa Cebu province, buong Pilipinas binabaha dahil ninanakaw lang naman ang flood control,” Davila wrote, adding that it breaks her heart to see a lot of people suffering from systemic corruption.
She ended her post with: “Nakaka-awa ang ordinaryong Pilipino. Habang nagdurusa sa hirap at kalamidad, maraming pulitiko naliligo sa nakaw na yaman. PLEASE. STOP. STEALING.”
