Authorities Remove Viral Sidewalk Wake in Quezon City
The viral sidewalk wake that caught the attention of netizens was removed from the sidewalk along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City.
A wake is a gathering held to honor and remember someone who has died, usually before they are buried or cremated. In the Philippines, a wake is called a burol and can last several days, giving people time to visit, offer condolences, and support the bereaved.
Last week, a wake along Commonwealth Avenue immediately spread like wildfire on social media and elicited comments online. The unusual sight involved the remains of a man laid out for viewing just a few steps away from one of Metro Manila’s busiest roads.

Residents shared that the wake had been there since Wednesday (August 6, 2025). The man, according to those who knew him, had no job and no immediate family to keep vigil over him. Many people wondered about his life and the circumstances that led to such a public farewell.
Barangay officials explained that the setup was part of the city’s free burial program, extended to those who have no means to cover funeral expenses. With the help of the local government, the remains were transferred to Catalunia Funeral Parlor. He is scheduled to be laid to rest on Wednesday.
A Facebook post from a concerned netizen showing the wake along the sidewalk quickly went viral on social media. Many expressed sympathy for the man, while others raised concerns about public safety and respect for the dead.
Under Section 13 of City Ordinance 3052 of Quezon City, sidewalks must remain clear for pedestrians, and blocking them is prohibited. While the wake may have been an act of necessity, officials moved to ensure it complied with the law while still giving the deceased a proper burial.
