Phivolcs Releases Bulletin about the Earthquake in Eastern Samar, April 23, 2025
EARTHQUAKE – The Phivolcs recorded a 4.4 magnitude quake in Eastern Samar today, April 23, 2025. Here are the details.
Following the 4.2 magnitude earthquake in Surigao del Norte a few days ago, another significant quake was recently recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) in another province. According to the agency, the quake recently hit Eastern Samar and it has a magnitude of 4.4.
The earthquake that struck Eastern Samar, April 23, 2025, was tectonic in origin. A tectonic quake is a shaking which is a product when the Earth’s crust breaks because of the geological forces on the rocks and the adjoining plates which result to chemical and physical changes.
According to Phivolcs, the earthquake that hit a part of Eastern Samar was located at 12.05°North, 125.51°East – 003 km North 60° East of Dolores. It had a depth of focus of 015 kilometers.
Phivolcs stated in its bulletin that damages are not expected from the said quake as well as aftershocks. According to the quake-recording agency, the following intensities were felt in these areas:
Intensity II
- City of Tacloban, LEYTE
Intensity IV
- Dolores and Can-Avid, EASTERN SAMAR
The following instrumental intensities were logged in these areas:
Intensity I
- Kawayan, BILIRAN
- City of Borongan, EASTERN SAMAR
- Gandara, SAMAR
Intensity II
- City of Catbalogan, SAMAR
Intensity III
- Can-Avid, EASTERN SAMAR
