Filipino singer Sam Concepcion joined the netizens calling for respect to local artists amid the “Gento” issue in It’s Showtime.
Sam Concepcion responds to the controversial topic of It’s Showtime hosts Vice Ganda and Anne Curtis on Twitter. A scenario from the noontime show’s ‘Isip Bata’ section inevitably generated arguments regarding music copyright levies.
This happened when a participant requested a dance battle with host Jhong Hilario using the famous song “Gento” by the P-pop boyband SB19. However, Vice revealed that the song will no longer be played on the show since the publishers have requested compensation.
The apparent “wondering” reaction of Anne Curtis and Vice Ganda to the royalty imposition did not sit well with A’Tin, the PPOP group fans, who demanded explanations from the two hosts. RESPECT LOCAL ARTISTS, a Twitter trend, has also formed on the social media site, a campaign aimed at rallying support for local composers.
Along with netizens, the “Gento” event gained attention from musicians, who all agreed on the importance of appropriately rewarding artists with royalties. Sam Concepcion, a singer and actor, posted this on Twitter.

Vice Ganda and Curtis, who were completely oblivious of their actions throughout the performance, have yet to explain their positions. Let’s see if they address the matter in the future, as supporters who appeared to take offense with how they handled the situation asked.
Meanwhile, an insider revealed that TV series such as ‘It’s Showtime’ frequently use songs for free during their promotional periods. It appears that such a period has passed, and Gento’s publishers are now requesting reimbursement in the name of SB19.
