Ateneo de Manila University clarified there were no weights used during conditioning exercises in knee-deep water.
Based on a previous article, ADMU confirmed the deaths of Divine Adili and Rene Clert Baterbonia in a statement. The cause of their untimely death was drowning. Both were members of the Blue Eagles basketball program and were considered among the team’s promising young players.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) has directed the NBI Central Office to establish a special task force tasked with carrying out a full, exhaustive, and unbiased investigation into the deaths of the Ateneo basketball players.
“As part of its investigation, the NBl will determine whether there is sufficient basis to recommend the filing of charges before the DOJ. The DOJ remains committed to ensuring that the facts are fully established and that justice is served,” the DOJ said.
As the investigation continues to determine what really happened, ADMU has made some explanations to clarify some Speculations that surrounded the tragic incident involving two student-athletes.
Citing accounts from individuals who attended the activity last Monday, the school said on Thursday afternoon that “the team was engaged in a knee-deep exercise near the shoreline when they were suddenly engulfed by massive waves and a powerful rip current.”
Most players were able to pull themselves back to shore to safety, however, this was not the case with Adili and Baterbonia. They were pulled away and to clarify the speculations that there were ankle weights during training, ADMU vehemently denied this.
“We state categorically, to protect the dignity of our fallen players, that no weights of any kind were used during the exercise,” Ateneo said.
The university’s statement supports the findings of the Aurora Provincial Police Office, which reported on Wednesday that no weights were found attached to the bodies of Baterbonia and Adili when they were recovered.
