Former Ilocos Sur Gov. Chavit Singson was arrested on Thursday afternoon over a cyberlibel case but posted bail shortly after.
Former Ilocos Sur Governor Luis “Chavit” Singson, 84, was arrested in Quezon City on Thursday, June 11, due to a cyberlibel charge. He was nabbed at his residence in Quezon City on a warrant issued by the Vigan City Regional Trial Court Branch 21.

He was placed under the custody of PS 12 for documentation and proper disposition, but on the same day, he was released after posting bail worth Php 60,000.00. According to reports, Singson surrendered voluntarily at the precinct and immediately posted bail.
No further details about the cyberlibel case filed against Singson have been disclosed. For his part, Singson said he considers it “an honor” to be arrested over the cyber libel case.
Previously, he alleged that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was behind the complaint, claiming that authorities are targeting those who speak out against corruption while those responsible for misusing public funds remain free.
Singson also accused Marcos of being the mastermind behind the alleged irregularities in flood control projects involving billions of pesos in government funds.
Chavit is a business tycoon and a politician. He was a councilman, congressman, governor, deputy national security advisor to the government of the Philippines, and mayor. His businesses cover retail, aviation, mining, agriculture, renewable energy, and sports.
He also owns the Baluarte Resort and Mini Zoo, and among his corporate activities are sponsoring events, environmentally friendly practices, training, and education.
He was the congressman and the governor of Ilocos Sur Province for three terms. Moreover, since 2018, Singson has served as president of the Philippine National Shooting Association, the country’s governing body for shooting sports. He also held the position of mayor of Narvacan, Ilocos Sur, beginning in June 2019.
