928 Senior Officials Linked in Drugs Signed Courtesy Resignation

The Philippine National Police (PNP) revealed that 928 senior officials already signed the courtesy resignation after being linked to illegal drugs.

Twenty-five high-ranking police officials have yet to submit their courtesy resignations over a week since interior secretary Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos Jr. made his appeal to the senior police officials, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Sunday.

Senior Officials Courtesy Resignation

PNP spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo said that 928 or 97 percent of the total 953 full colonels and generals across the country have tendered their resignations. The police headquarters received 24 more resignations on Saturday.

According to Fajardo, the majority of the remaining resignations are expected to come from Visayas and Mindanao, Abalos stated that there would be no need to reveal the names of the authorities discovered with ties to the illegal drug trade, based on the report.

“This is a radical move. It looks like when I said, extraordinary times call for radical and bold acts. This is out of the box,” he said at a press conference.

“If, let’s say, you receive someone’s resignation, ‘let them retire silently.’ If we have enough evidence that will build up criminal cases, let’s sue them in court.”

A 5-member panel, the members of which have yet to be announced, will review the resignations and decide what action to take against so-called “ninja cops,” according to the secretary of the DILG. The committee will have sole authority over how it handles its findings, including whether to file cases or allow police to retire.

Karapatan, a human rights organization, blasted Abalos’ decision to allow top cops to “retire peacefully.” Rights secretary-general Cristina Palabay raised concern about allowing guilty authorities off the hook through retirement.
