DepEd Urges LGUs to Avoid Unnecessary Class Suspensions
The Department of Education (DepEd) has urged the local government units to avoid the unnecessary suspension of classes.
Over the previous days, Tropical Storm Paeng has been lashing the Philippines with violent winds and heavy rains. Paeng has also caused flash floods and landslides in the affected areas.
The inclement weather condition prompted several local government units to suspend the classes to ensure the safety of both students and school employees.
On Friday (October 28, 2022), the Education Department has released a statement regarding the consecutive cancellation of classes imposed by numerous local government units over the past few days.
The agency told the LGUs to only suspend classes during public emergencies and severe weather disturbances and calamities. DepEd wants to maximize the learning recovery of students, according to DepEd spokesperson Michael Poa.
“The DepEd aims to not only bring learners back to school, but also institute measures to maximize learning recovery,” Poa said.
Poa also reiterated that local government units should refrain from declaring unnecessary class suspensions such as events that are not related to the curriculum. He said that learners need an uninterrupted class sessions.
“[The] DepEd is against the unnecessary cancellation of classes and the use of our schools as billeting areas for events that are not related to the curriculum,” Poa added.
DepEd that avoiding uninterrupted class sessions can help teachers avoid unnecessary make-up classes, which is considered as an additional burden to their teaching load.
