The arrested civilians were identified as John Carlo Zapanta and Carl Anito. Based on the report of the Pasig City Police, the suspects were arrested in an entrapment operation that was joined by the Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Action Team (IMEAT), 35th SAC, 3SAB-SAF, and Pasig CPS, NCRPO in Brgy. San Miguel, Pasig City.

Prior to this, it is claimed that on October 18, 2022, members of the Pasig City Police forced their way into the residence of the complainant, Maricel Banta Opiana, 38, and took him into custody on suspicion of breaking Republic Act 9165, also known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

The victim’s son’s piggy bank was allegedly stolen together with P10,000 in cash from the accused. Following this, the suspects allegedly demanded P100,000 from the complainant in exchange for his release and the dropping of all charges when the police took him to the precinct but did not detain him.

The complainant allegedly transferred the suspect’s P10,000 through GCash as part of a promise to lessen the amount of money they demanded. On the morning of October 19, it was claimed that the complainant used an e-wallet payment to give the suspect P6,000.

Based on the report, he was given permission to go home that evening on the condition that he would pay the remaining P4,000 debt. The accused were unaware that the complainant had informed the police, which led to their capture in an entrapment operation.

Four pieces of P1,000 marked cash were used in the operation, a small packet of suspected shabu and a unit Glock.9mm pistol with two magazines and live ammunition, a unit of Taurus.9mm pistol with three magazines and live ammunition, a unit of caliber 45 (airsoft), a black and white Yamaha Mio motorcycle without a license plate, and four different kinds of cell phones were all taken into custody from the suspects.

PCOL Sacro reaffirmed its commitment to holding its police officers at the Pasig City Police Station accountable for any misbehavior in this area. He also vehemently denounced the personnel who were detained and gave the populace the assurance that they will continue to uphold the law without fear or favor.

The suspects are currently being pressed and charged with robbery (extortion), violation of Republic Act 10591 or The Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, and violation of RA 9165 or The Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 at the IMEG Headquarters office in Camp BGen Rafael T Crame, Quezon City.
