Many Filipino Students Prefer Physical Classes, Research Group Says

A research group reported that many Filipino students prefer physical classes for struggling to study at home due to distractions.

The Psychosocial Support and Children’s Rights Resource Center (PSTCRRC) commissioned by Save the Children Philippines conducted a survey among students regarding their own preferences when it comes to learning system in the country.

The study shows that a lot of Filipino kids are struggling to study at home due to lack of motivation. Many students are also distracted by social media and gaming temptation on their home.

The research reported that 33% of the respondents do not consider home as environment for learning. Most students felt that they were not obligated to study at home. The kids need discipline and educator that will guide them.

The researchers said that most students are struggling to keep up with the new learning setup, environment, modality, and technology changes. Children prefer face-to-face classes rather than the online learning system.

“Most (67%) found it challenging to understand the learning materials in modules or online classes. Young children struggled to comprehend the content of their modules, especially those who could not read or write well yet,” the study reads.

According to the report, caregivers are also struggling to guide the students and reiterated that the current learning materials such as gadgets and internet browsing were too advanced for them

The study also added that financial problems and lack of gadgets as well as internet access contribute to the burden of Filipino children. The COVID-19 pandemic also adds stress to some kids who witness the hardships of their parents due to the health crisis.
