Malacañang Confirms Marcos Jr. Call for Special Session w/ Senate

MARCOS JR. – The President officially called for a special session with the senators amid the issue in the Senate.

The recent turn of events in the Senate has hooked the attention of countless Filipinos. Many were left disappointed by how the recent happenings took place — some senators are surrounded with corruption allegations, there’s a controversial incident that ended with the exit of “ICC wanted” Sen. Bato dela Rosa, the controversial shift of leadership, and many others.

Currently, two (2) senators assert their claim that they are the Senate chief — senators Alan Peter Cayetano and Sherwin Gatchalian. The Senate had a controversial plenary session last June 3 following the absence of then-Senate Pres. Cayetano and the members of the majority bloc.

Following a two-day absence of the then-majority bloc, Sen. Chiz Escudero made an unexpected appearance at the Senate plenary session which led to a quorum of 12 and paved the way for the session to be held. The senators voted to declare all seats vacant.

After declaring all seats vacant, Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian was elected as Senate President Pro Tempore. Following his election to the second highest post in the chamber, he presided the session as the acting Senate President.

Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano insisted that he allegedly remains as the legal and moral Senate president of the Republic of the Philippines. He believes that what the 12 senators did was allegedly unconstitutional.

Cayetano earned both support and criticisms from the public. His colleagues previously called for his resignation amid his absence during the plenary sessions.

Malacañang recognized the Senate Presidency of Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian. Recently, Pres. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. officially called for a special session with the senators.

The senators previously explained that a special session with Pres. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. would be a discussion for the unfinished works in the Senate following the feud. Based on News5, the special session is set on Wednesday, July 17.

“Maliwanag ang nais ni Pangulong Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. Naglabas ng Proclamation No. 1318 ngayong June 15, 2026 para mapabilis ang aksyon sa mga panukalang batas na magpapatibay sa social protection, magpapalawak ng access sa edukasyon at healthcare, at magpapatuloy ang suporta sa mga kababayan nating mas na nangangailangan,” Palace press officer undersecretary Claire Castro said.

Based on the report, Marcos Jr. also wants the speedy drafting of the anti-political dynasty law. The Palace official stressed that the President has already spoken and called on the senators to “get back to work”.

Previously, Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano spoke on Sen. Chiz Escudero appearing at the Senate plenary session. He even mentioned Escudero’s wife, actress-model Heart Evangelista.
