Jessica Soho in Afghanistan 19 Years Ago, Shares Traumatizing Encounter

In a life-threatening situation from 19 years ago, Jessica Soho risking her life to report from Afghanistan remembered.

JESSICA SOHO – Here’s a look back when Jessica Soho risked her life to report the miserable situation in Afghanistan way back in 2002.

Currently, a major concern apart from the pandemic is the happening in Afghanistan. The militant group Taliban has taken over the whole of Afghanistan, sweeping into its capital and seized power in just a matter of two days. This happened two weeks before the United States troops will completely withdraw from the two-decade war. The last troops would leave by the end of August.

The Afghan government has collapsed and President Ashraf Ghani of Afghanistan fled away leaving his country. It’s not clear yet as to where he went for his safety. As the militant group now has full control, Afghans fear for their lives, and videos of the situation there surface online. People were seen clinging on to their lives in a plane just so they could leave the war-stricken place.

It’s not clear what’s next for Afghanistan but the Taliban say they want to form an “inclusive, Islamic government” with other factions. But people just won’t trust them. They fear that the rules would be violent and oppressive. And such incident is even more terrifying for women living in there.

And way back in 2002, it can be recalled that in the middle of a war, Kapuso host Jessica Soho and her team flew there for the sake of information. In her memories, what they have experienced in there amid the was traumatizing. They almost lost their lives. They went there months after the Americans were able to control the situation and forced out the Taliban.

Vivid in her memory was the “deafening sound that suddenly rendered everything on mute, like on a gadget or a TV screen; the smell of burning petrol; the ripples of heat so accurately depicted in movies with explosions”. It’s also clear in her head what she saw in the streets of Kabul: “one-legged beggars, handicapped by the landmines; a few faceless women covered up in their dull blue burqas; the wide-eyed children, smart beyond their years; and the men who liked to stare at intruders, especially women” as per GMA post.

She recalled that every corner, there are ravages of war. This happened way back in 2002. The last time the Taliban has taken control of the country was way back in the late 1990s. They ran the country from 1996 to 2001.
