Elderly Vendor Fired by School Admin & Replaced w/ Vending Machine

School administration fired an elderly vendor who has been operating a drink stall for 60 years and replaced her with a vending machine.

A Singaporean girl named Pearl Chang said that her grand auntie who is selling at a Singapore Chinese Girls’ School canteen has been replaced by a vending machine. The vendor is waking up early every morning and selling drinks to both students and teachers since 1950s.

Chang said that her grandaunt is selling at the school canteen for already 60 years. The grandma vendor becomes an iconic part of the school culture for selling delicious drinks during special events and school activities.

“I remember from time to time she would be extremely happy like when students give her cards and ex-students come back to visit her. All these small gestures, she loves it even though she doesn’t say it much,” Pearl said.

Unfortunately, the school administration decided to reduce sugary drinks to keep the young students healthy. The school told the grandaunt that she could no longer sell in her own stall but she has to share with another vendor.

The elderly vendor was also prohibited to sell cold drinks but she is allowed to sell lukewarm water. Eventually, the old lady had to close the chop because the students didn’t like lukewarm water.

The school installed a vending machine at the vendor’s spot after she left. The vending machine sold sugary drinks, which is the same reason why the vendor closed her shop. The students take pity for the friendly vendor.

The students signed a petition for the school to bring back the lady vendor but the vending machine is in place.
