Deployment of Pinay Domestic Helpers in Kuwait Banned by DOLE
The Department of Labor and Employment has banned the deployment of newly hired Pinay domestic helpers in Kuwait.
On Friday (January 3, 2020), the Labor Department officially stopped sending newly hired Pinay maids in Kuwait as the government officials await the result of investigation regarding the death of a Pinay helper last year.
Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III announced that the deployment ban of domestic workers took immediately. Skilled workers and returning employees with existing contracts were not included on the ban.
Workers with overseas employment certificate and exit clearance are excluded from the ban. The deployment ban has been made a few days after the demise of Pinay OFW Jeanelyn Padernal Villavende who allegedly died due to her employer’s cruelty.
Bello explained that the implementation of the ban aims to protect Filipino workers abroad from maltreatment.
“It might ripen into a total deployment ban if we do not get justice for Villavende,” Bello said.
The Labor Secretary met Kuwaiti Ambassador to the Philippines Musaed Saleh Ahmad Althwaikh last Thursday and talked regarding Villalende’s case. Althwaikh said that Villalende’s employers were already in police custody for investigation.
