Minor Suspect in Tacloban School Shooting Allegedly Broke Into Aunt’s Home to Take Firearm
The minor Tacloban shooter at San Jose National High School allegedly broke into her aunt’s home to take gun.
On Wednesday (July 1,2026), new details were revealed during a Senate hearing regarding the firearm used in the school shooting incident at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City.
Police Staff Sergeant Arla Ray Paciencia revealed that her 14-year-old nephew, known by the alias Nash, allegedly broke into her home and took her service firearm before the shooting. According to Paciencia, both her house and the storage areas containing the weapon were locked at the time.
Paciencia explained that the firearm was kept inside a gun box, which was placed in a locked plastic locker. Investigators were told that the teenager allegedly forced his way into the house, damaged the locker, and opened the gun box to gain access to the weapon.
The policewoman said she was the only person who had possession of the house key. She acknowledged that the proper standard for storing licensed firearms is to keep them in a safety vault rather than a plastic locker.
The lady cop also addressed questions about her relationship with her nephew. She said the boy often expressed a desire to become a police officer and looked up to her as a role model. Because of his interest in law enforcement, she admitted that she had taken him to a firing range once in the past.
Some lawmakers raised concerns about exposing minors to firearms and firearm-related activities, arguing that children should be kept away from situations that could encourage unsafe behavior.
The firearm used in the Tacloban school shooting was later confirmed to be Paciencia’s service weapon. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including how the teenager obtained the gun and whether existing firearm storage rules were properly followed.
