Malaysian SEA Games Athletes Ordered To Get Polio Vaccines Due To Outbreak

POLIO OUTBREAK – The poliovirus was believed to have been eradicated two decades ago according to officials. However, the virus has recently resurfaced.

In this previous article, we learned about the most recent cases of polio in the Philippines. But, there are still mothers that are hesitant to give their children vaccines.

With this, the Philippines SEA Games Organising Committee (Phisgoc) sent a letter to the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) stating there was an outbreak of polio in the country.

Based on an article from Inquirer, all SEA Games-bound Malaysia athletes were ordered to get vaccinated for polio. There was a total of 1,114 athletes and officials from Malaysia coming into the Philippines.

According to OCM deputy president Datuk Seri Azim Zabidi, the letter stated that the Malaysian contingent was advised to get the vaccination. He added that the continents were supposed to get in on Tuesday.

However, Azim added that they only got to do it on Thursday. Adding to this, they said that they must get vaccinated before leaving for the SEA Games.

As per the article, it was learned that 90% of the Athletes from Malaysia had already received their measles shots.

In totality, there would be 774 Malaysian athletes competing in the 30th SEA Games held in the Philippines. It comprised of 448 men and 326 women.

The Sea games would run from November 30 to December 11. Also, adding to the list of Malaysian contingents are 340 officials (275 men and 65 women).

The Malaysian team would then be sporting Bata shoes with tiger stripes. With this, Ajay Ramachandran said they would be sponsoring 1,200 pairs of sports shoes for the Malaysian group at RM150,000 per pair.
