Facebook To Ban Self-Harm Pictures On Social Media Platform

Self-Harm Pictures To Be Prohibited on Facebook

The social media giant Facebook will ban self-harm images on the website and Instagram to protect users from suicidal thoughts.

Facebook’s global head of safety Antigone Davis said that the company would prohibit graphic cutting images aiming to ensure the safety of its users.

Davis announced they will impose the new policy on the following weeks with experts in different countries in the world.

The experts reaffirmed that the social media giant could allow the sharing of suicidal thoughts but should prohibit users to share content promoting it.

“But the experts also advised that some graphic images of self-harm, particularly cutting, can have the potential to unintentionally promote self-harm even when they are shared in the context of admission or a path to recovery,” Davis said.

Previously, Facebook allowed the sharing of self-destruction images to enable family and friends to prevent their loved ones to pull them out of danger.

However, the company admitted that they still need to re-examine their policies aiming to let people to get help as well as to prevent suicide.

“The experts emphasized the importance of building products that facilitate supportive connections, finding more opportunities to offer help and resources and, more importantly, avoid shaming people who post about their self-harm thoughts or actions,” Davis added quoted by Philstar.
